    backlog birthdays
Elizabeth and I spent a delightful afternoon at our son Brian's house celebrating birthdays for my son-in-law Geoff and my granddaughter Alex. Their actual birthdays were in July but as is often the case in our family, this was the first weekend we were all available to celebrate. We gathered on the 2nd story deck Brian had built at the back of the old house. I say "old house" because he bought our house when we bought the Bhigg House. In those older days there was a large back porch on the house. We had a door built on the second story to allow access to the roof as a fire exit. We occasionally would treat the roof like a deck and perhaps this was the seed of Brian's deck.

The afternoon was lovely and the little trees Elizabeth had let grow to shade the garage now also shade the deck. Brian handled the bbq duties and the rest of us handled the eating. He is a very good cook.

After much family gossip we got down to the important part of the day, the gifts. :) Geoff was pleased with our gift of tickets to the local hockey team, the "manitoba Moose". Alex was excited over the walkie talkies she received but the real hit was a Boggle game - or maybe a henna painting kit.

A great day spent with a great family. I am so lucky.

    Tom is now with us
I've just used my one invite code for Tom Jeffers, username=sexybass. He will likely post his first message tonight. Drop over and say hello.

    Japanese pavillion show
Tom and I took in the show at the Japanese pavillion tonight. This is part of Winnipeg's massive multi-cultural two week festival called "Folklorama". My son-in-law Geoff and my grandson Jesse are "embassadors" this year. This means they wear traditional garb, greet visitors and host the evenings. My granddaughter Alex is part of the traditional Japanese dance troop here in Winnipeg.

The show was great. The kids were great. The local Taiko drumming troop (who are world renound in taiko circles) ended the show with a flurrish.

We skipped the Japanese food offerings as the line up was very long and we didn't want to miss the show. There were many cultural displays, demonstrations of a tea cerimony and sushi preparations. A nice evening.

    hot and busy
Between the heat and the temperature it has been an uncomfortable day here in the Peg. Peggy O'Neill and I did a little more recording this afternoon. I must confess I love playing backup on other folks' work. I like the challenge of adding to the arrangement and trying to match up with the rythm of the lead and their diction patterns. Tis fun!

When we got back home David Rivers was keen to try the LOTR Trivia game. This is another of the very small group of board games I can actually play. There is no need to hide things from the other players. I think it time I went back and read LOTR again. While I did win the game I also missed three of the questions. Anyone else tried the game? What did you think of it?

Peggy caught the 11:30pm bus back to MPLS. I suspect she will be back later in the winter to carry on with the recording effort. On Wednesday Geri Sullivan arrives on a business trip. It will be good to spend some time with Geri. At cons we never manage to get any visiting in. :) I'll organize a music party for Saturday night while she is here. I owe her an "E-minor Lullaby".

Hope it cools down a bit tomorrow or the humidity drops.

    full day
As I write, David, Joe and Peggy are playing Carcassonne on the dining room table just behind me. If I goof on my typing it's likely because I am dodging flying game pieces. :)

Peggy O'Neill is visiting this weekend while she does some recording toward her new CD. Today I wandered over with her to the studio and threw in an occasional comment here and there. She got even when I took the microphone to add some backup tracks. A fun and productive day. We'll do it again tomorrow.

Later tonight I'll be heading over to the Academy Coffee Company with Tom to catch a local lady in concert. It should be fun. I first met Cat Janx when she was busking downtown. She has come a long way since then and is an impressive young performer. I expect to buy her new CD tonight.

    Sleep? Who needs sleep? :)

Had an unexpected visit from Felicia Herman, Joel Rosenberg and the girls. Apologies for my phonetic spellings. After catching up on our lives of late I suggested we all try Alesha's for supper. Joel and Felicia have fond memories of the food at the CUSS dinners at Keycon in the old days so they were eager to go. The potato soup was excellent and the borsht very nice. The "stuffed pork" and "zubicasaw" appetisers disappeared with suitable speed and sounds of enjoyment.

I ordered my usual "North Ender special" (cabbage rolls, perogies, kubasaw, mushroom gravy and loads of sour cream). Joel also gave this a try while Felicia tried the perogy platter, Judy tried the potato pancakes, Peggy tried the perogies and Rachel had a plain cheeseburger. Everyone enjoyed the meal and we were so stuffed we had no room for desert.

Joel and family went back to Winnipeg Beach where they were visiting with family and I fell over. All that great Ukrainian food did me in. :) We have been frequenting Alesha's for over 35 years now and recommend it highly to visitors to our fair city.

    getting the hang of it
Thanks to all for the warm welcome to LJ. Interesting to see just how many of my friends are active here. Along with spam I can see how LJ is contributing to the slow decline of email popularity. :)

I've finally read much of the FAQ and have a better grasp of the system. Once I get used to reading more in LJ I'll figure out how most people use the system. A couple of questions do come to mind though.

    Q. How can I read the journal entries for a given person? I see that new entries for those on my "friends" list can be read when I click on the "friends" link but how can II go to one person's journal and read their last n entries?

    Q. Which PC client program works best under Windows 98 SR2? I think I might find it easier to work with a client than work directly on the web. At east that is my hope.

    Q. Is it usual to carry on conversations through the "reply to comment" function? I can see how this might end up happening as I respond to comments from various folk to a given comment. Does this get cumbersome over time?

Looking forward to spending more time in LJ in the next couple of weeks. I will be away from home Aug. 27 - Oct. 1 and won't likely be here much over that period.

Bhigg House hugs all round and extra ones for Minnehaha who got me started here.

OK, how does this thing start?
This is my first attempt at posting something. I am still floundering around and have much of the FAQ to read before I have a clue what I am doing. With any luck I'll get it sorted and be able to use it.
